What is the difference in meaning?

在意思上它們有什么區(qū)別呢?

Very hot means it is hot, but possible to drink.

very hot的意思是它很熱,但是還是可以喝的。

Too hot means it is NOT possible to drink, probably because I will burn myself.

too hot的意思是并不能喝,可能是因?yàn)闀?huì)燙壞自己。

Very means a high degree or a very large amount.

very就是意味著很高程度或者很大量。

Too normally has a negative meaning.

too通常有否定意義。

Let’s look at another example:

我們?cè)賮砜磦€(gè)例句:

◇The fridge is very heavy, but Mike can lift it.

冰箱很重,但邁克能把它抬起來。

Here we are saying it is difficult for Mike but it is still possible for him to lift it.

在這里我們說這對(duì)邁克來說很難,但他仍然有可能舉起它。

◇The fridge is too heavy. Steve can’t lift it.

冰箱太重了。史蒂夫舉不起來。

Here we are saying it is NOT possible for Steve to lift it, it is impossible because it is too heavy for him.

這里我們要說的是史蒂夫不可能舉起它,這是不可能的,因?yàn)樗鼘?duì)他來說太重了。

You can see that in this sentence TOO has a negative meaning again.

你可以看到在這個(gè)句子中TOO有一個(gè)否定的意思。

One more example:

再舉一個(gè)例子:

It was very cold, but we played football anyway.

天氣很冷,但我們還是去踢足球了。

Yes, it was difficult but still possible. My legs were frozen but we still had a good time.

是的,這是困難的,但仍然是可能的。我的腿凍僵了,但我們?nèi)匀煌娴煤荛_心。

◇It was too cold to play football, so we stayed at home.

天太冷了,不能踢足球,所以我們呆在家里。

Again TOO has a negative meaning. Too cold means it was excessively cold so it was not possible to play football.

Too再次表示否定的含義,too cold的意思是天氣太冷了,不能踢足球了。

Note: we do NOT say… it was very much cold… or too much cold.

提示:我們不說it was very much cold… 或者too much cold.

These are NOT correct in English.

這在英語里是不正確的。

Very + Adverb 副詞

After VERY we can use an adverb. There is a verb before these so the structure is:

VERY之后我們可以用副詞。在這些之前有一個(gè)動(dòng)詞,所以結(jié)構(gòu)是:

Verb + Very + Adverb

動(dòng)詞 very 副詞

Our example sentences:

例句:

◇She ran very quickly and won the race. She didn’t just run quickly… she ran VERY quickly.

她跑得很快,贏得了比賽。她不僅跑得很快,而且跑得非???。

◇We played very badly and lost.

我們踢得很糟糕,輸了。

Note: it is better to use another adverb instead of very + adverb.

注意:用其他副詞代替very +更好。

For example, instead of saying very badly, you could say terribly.

例如,與其說very bad,你還不如說terrible。

We played terribly and lost.

我們踢得糟透了,輸了。

Too + Adverb 副詞

We can also create a sentence using TOO instead of VERY.

我們也可以用TOO來代替VERY來造句。

Verb + Too + Adverb

動(dòng)詞 too 副詞

◇He drove too quickly and had an accident.

他開車太快,出了車禍。

◇I arrived too early and nobody was there.

我到得太早了,那里一個(gè)人也沒有。

◇He speaks too quietly. I can’t hear what he says.

他說話聲音太小了。我聽不見他在說什么。

You can see again that TOO usually has a negative meaning or result.

你可以再次看到,它通常也有消極的意思或結(jié)果。

He drove too quickly… and the negative result of this… he had an accident.

他開得太快了……這帶來了負(fù)面的結(jié)果……他出了車禍。

I arrived too early… and the negative result of this… I had nobody to talk to.

我來得太早了……而這帶來的負(fù)面結(jié)果是……沒有人可以跟我說話。
