Prepare for your trip
After accepting your offer, it’s time to prepare for your trip. It’s a good idea to understand well ahead of time what you need to arrange, the steps you need to take and when the latest day is that you should arrive in Melbourne.
There are many things you need to organise before arriving; these include applying for an Australian student visa, booking accommodation and taking out health cover. Depending on the type of study exchange you are on, some of these may be arranged for you as part of the program.
After you have accepted your offer to study at Swinburne, you can start planning your arrival in Melbourne.
There are a number of things you must do before you depart your home country. Use our resources to help plan your arrival.

1.Pre-departure checklist
There are many things to organise before you travel to Melbourne. Use our checklist to make sure you complete all these important tasks.
Before you depart for Australia, make sure you:
obtain your passport and visa
check your Letter of Offer to confirm details about your course the commencement date
confirm your accommodation booking
confirm your travel arrangements with your travel agency and/or airline
book your airport pick-up
know where to find the airport meeting point and who to contact if you get lost or miss your flight.

2.Applying for your visa
In most cases, you will need a student visa to study in Australia.
Visas are not automatic and all criteria must be met. You must not apply for a student visa before you have accepted your offer to study at Swinburne.
Student visas can only be granted for study in courses that are registered on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students.

Before you apply
To apply for a student visa, you will need to have accepted your offer to study at Swinburne and paid your deposit. You will need to present the following documents to the ABF:
your Confirmation of Enrolment (CoE) from Swinburne
your Letter of Offer from Swinburne
all other relevant documents listed on the ABF visa checklists.
Please ensure you read and understand the DIBP visa checklists and visa conditions and requirements before you apply.

Conditions of your visa
Your student visa will be subject to a range of conditions. If you do not meet those conditions, your visa may be cancelled.

Note that your visa will be issued for the course(s) listed on your CoE. If you change or extend your course at Swinburne, you may need to change your visa or visa details. Restrictions apply to changes and extensions. Please refer to the ABF website for more information.

Students under 18
If you are under 18 years of age, your parents must nominate a guardian before ABF will consider your application for a student visa. DIBP requires your guardian to:
lives in Australia
be at least 21 years of age
be related to you
be of good character.
Note that ABF defines a relative as a spouse, de facto partner, child, brother, sister, step-child, step-parent, step-brother, step-sister, grandparent, grandchild, aunt, uncle, niece, nephew, step-grandparent, step-grandchild, step-aunt, step-uncle, step-niece or step-nephew of the applicant.
If you do not have a relative who lives in Australia, your parents will need to arrange for you to stay in accommodation approved by Swinburne. They will also need to contact a Swinburne-approved care provider agency before Swinburne will issue an CoE and a Confirmation of Appropriate Accommodation and Welfare (CAAW) form.

3.Bringing your family to Melbourne
If you plan to bring your family with you to Melbourne, there are a number of requirements you must consider.
When deciding whether to bring your family to Melbourne, you are encouraged to consider:
the impact on your own studies if your family is unable to adjust to life in Melbourne
whether family members who do not speak English may have additional challenges adjusting to life in Melbourne
whether your children will be able to adjust to schooling in Melbourne and re-adjust on their return home.
We strongly recommend you complete your first semester of study before you bring your family to Melbourne. This will give you time to adjust to life and study in Melbourne, to find somewhere to live, and to organise childcare or schooling if you have children.

Ensure you have sufficient funds to support your family for the duration of their stay in Melbourne.
Costs you will need to consider include:
airfares for your family to and from Australia
Overseas Student Health Cover for all family members
higher rent for a larger home
living expenses for dependants, including extra costs for food, clothing and other necessities
additional transport costs within Melbourne, such as public transport fares
child care and schooling.

Children in Australia
Child care
Arrangements for child care must be made for children under the age of five if your spouse is unable to care for them. Child care arrangements must be made prior to any child arriving in Australia. There are long waiting lists at many childcare centres and placements are not guaranteed.
Swinburne has a limited number of spaces in our on-campus childcare facilities. The local city council where you live may be able to assist with child care options. When selecting a childcare centre, make sure it is a government-approved facility. You can find information about child care in the state of Victoria on the Victorian Government's Child Care Services website.

Schools
If you have children between five and 17 years of age who you plan to bring to Australia, you must enrol them in school. Arrangements for enrolment must be made prior to any child arriving in Australia.
Selecting a school
For a complete list of Victorian primary and secondary schools, as well as information about fees, applications and enrolment, visit the Victorian Government Schools website.
Applications to non-government schools must be made directly to the school of your choice.
School fees
If you enrol your child in a government school, you may be exempt from paying full tuition fees. For non-government schools and tertiary institutions, you will be charged full tuition fees.
If you will be enrolled as a postgraduate research student at Swinburne, the Victorian Government may provide exemption from tuition fees in Victorian government primary and secondary schools for your children.

After you have accepted your offer to study at Swinburne, there are several things you will need to do before you start classes.

After accepting your offer, you will receive information about enrolling in your course.

If you are unable to enrol before arriving in Melbourne, you can enrol during orientation.
The online induction and tutorial provides you with information about your rights and responsibilities as an international student in Australia. You can access the tutorial at any time to help you understand your rights and responsibilities.

If you have questions about enrolment or units of study, contact the Enrolment Help Desk between Monday and Friday, 9 am to 5 pm.
During Orientation Week, you can speak with an International Student Adviser.
